The Adirondack State Park is approximately the size of Vermont and is part of the Canadian Sheild. Unlike the ancient Appalachians, the Adirondacks are uniquely new and are still growing by about an inch per yearView from Indian Falls in the Adirondack High Peaks. Once covered by mile-high glaciers, the rounded peaks expose ancient bedrock, and the deeply cut valleys are now dotted with seemingly endless chains of mountain lakes.

New York created the Adirondack state park in 1882 to protect the wild nature of this stunning region. The extraordinary number of trees and the low humidity creates oxygen-rich clean air that was once the natural treatment for tuberculosis. The park agency controls the development of private houses and villages, keeping private land from impeding on the public regions of the park.
